DC United’s playoff hopes took a severe turn for the worse Saturday night with a disappointing effort in a 2-0 home loss to Chivas USA Saturday. “They were a better team,” said Ben Olsen who was ejected in the 65th minute for retaliating to a Yamith Cuesta foul. United sits in fourth place in the Eastern Conference, ninth overall in the combined table and now four points behind Colorado for the final playoff spot.

DC United squandered another lead and the Fire came from behind on the road for the second consecutive week, earning four of a possible six points in their first two matches as the guests of two home openers. United dominated the first half taking the lead in the seventh minute on a fantastic goal by Luciano Emilio, his first of the season. But the Fire roared and got the equalizer through Patrick Nyarko eight minutes after halftime.

With more injuries piling up and their MLS playoff hopes in peril, DC United sent a marginally experienced 16-man squad to the Monster Cave in San Jose, Costa Rica for the away leg of their CONCACAF Champions League series with CD Saprissa. At least Zach Wells, the starting goalkeeper for the game, is familiar with what the expect, having traveled to Puntarenas, Costa Rica last year with the Houston Dynamo for a CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinal match. In that match, Wells replaced Pat Onstad after the starter injured his calf in the 18th minute and stopped a penalty kick shortly thereafter.
