Josh Wolff was clearly DC United’s best player in their season opening 3-1 pasting of visiting Columbus last Saturday night. The Kansas City castoff was brought here by United coach Ben Olsen not only to score goals as he did against the Crew, but for his experience and professionalism to nurture yet another group of [...]
Ben Olsen unveiled the new DC United on Saturday and it wasn’t your father’s United. While this year’s version is a logical extension of the team’s progression last year, it has one key element that deviates from past practice. At least for now, there is no creative midfielder. With the acquisition of Dax McCarty and [...]
No one at DC United would ever admit it publicly and through the years they have given it the proper lip service, but recently, the tone of their very well selected words and their body language are all pointing to next Wednesday’s U.S. Open Cup match against Columbus as a far bigger priority than the [...]
With a surprising 3-2 win at Seattle Thursday night for their first road win of the season, DC United are on a serious uptick going into the two week World Cup hiatus. They are now unbeaten in their last five overall matches that includes two league wins and a scoreless draw, their first clean sheet [...]
Not only did DC United give their fans a good performance at RFK Stadium Wednesday night, they came away victorious, defeating star-studded AC Milan 3-2 before a split but appreciative crowd of 30,367. “We had a point to prove tonight,” said Chris Pontius, who who had a part in United’s first two goals.
Saturday night’s latest disastrous effort showed that DC United Coach Curt Onalfo has a reasonable, if incomplete, understanding of his roster’s capabilities. “I thought we created some good chances, and in the second half we went straight down the middle and we lost our shape,” said Santino Quaranta. “The second half it seemed like I stood out there the whole time just waiting, waiting, waiting,” he added. “Nothing really came about.”
DC United can only be left with a sense of bewilderment after losing to the New England Revolution on Saturday night. Two games into the 2010 season, the team has no points and no goals. “I thought we moved the ball, I thought we created chances,” said head coach Curt Onalfo after the loss to New England. “Unfortunately you have to finish those chances.” And therein lay the rub.
DC United coaching staff have been testing Santino Quaranta as the team’s creative midfielder this preseason. It is part of a larger plan to broaden DC United’s attack this season and its success (or failure) will directly influence the team’s acquisition targets at midseason.
Curt Onalfo’s first move in charge was to bring back former fan favorite Troy Perkins. The move looks great on paper and D.C. United needed a goalkeeper badly, but the acquisition could be bittersweet if Perkins leaves for national team duty this summer. The team still has other glaring holes and did little to address these in today’s MLS SuperDraft.
Following the 3-0 CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) victory over Marathon it seemed as if DC United might finally have approached some capability to use their wings in attack. The team then came out against San Jose and executed a classic example of wing attack as Ben Olsen and Chris Pontius worked the left side [...]
