Panthers Send 4 Players to Pro Bowl

1 January 2006 | C Whitmer

As the Carolina Panthers enters the home stretch in the NFL playoff race, there is only one goal that both Panther players and coaches are focused on achieving: winning the Super Bowl.

And since football is a team sport, accolades for individual player achievement are not nearly as important as success for the unit as a whole. However, when one team has FOUR players who are considered by fans, coaches and players to be among the NFL’s elite performers, such individual honors are usually indicative of a team that knows how to win.

And when the 2006 Pro Bowl rosters were announced, quarterback Jake Delhomme, defensive end Julius Peppers, wide receiver Steve Smith and guard Mike Wahle were all selected to represent the NFC in pro football’s all-star game.

This will be the first trip to Honolulu for Delhomme and Wahle, and the second for Smith and Peppers.

Quarterback Jake Delhomme has earned his spot with yet another impressive season, thus far throwing for 2,998 yards, and 20 touchdowns. Defensive end Julius Peppers is currently tied for the team lead with 7.5 sacks, while guard Mike Wahle has been an integral part of an offensive line that has allowed a scant 24 sacks in 14 games. To no one’s surprise, league leading wide receiver and MVP candidate Steve Smith will return to the Pro Bowl, who, through 14 games, has snagged an amazing 93 catches and netted 1,414 receiving yards.

There’s no doubt these four players have impressive numbers across the board, and it’s always good to know that you have guys on both sides of the football who can get the job done, but what’s most important to all of these guys is making that big trip to Detroit, and bringing the Lombardi trophy home to Charlotte.
