Perkins re-acquisition could be bittersweet for United

Curt Onalfo’s first move in charge was to bring back former fan favorite Troy Perkins. The move looks great on paper and D.C. United needed a goalkeeper badly, but the acquisition could be bittersweet if Perkins leaves for national team duty this summer. The team still has other glaring holes and did little to address these in today’s MLS SuperDraft.

United keeps hopes undampened by the rain, 1-0

DC United snapped a three game losing streak and kept their slim playoff hopes alive with an opportunistic 1-0 win over the Columbus Crew on a cold, rainy night at RFK Stadium. Luciano Emilio capitalized on one of the precious few chances United could muster, finishing a nifty combination play with Boyzzz Khumalo just past the quarter hour mark of a first half.

DC United’s playoff hopes took a severe turn for the worse Saturday night with a disappointing effort in a 2-0 home loss to Chivas USA Saturday. “They were a better team,” said Ben Olsen who was ejected in the 65th minute for retaliating to a Yamith Cuesta foul. DC United’s playoff hopes took a severe blow Sunday with a 2-1 loss to San Jose at RFK Stadium. Despite taking a lead through Jaime Moreno and controlling possession through most of the match, mental lapses and an overall flat second stanza doomed the home side, which has fallen for the second consecutive time in an MLS game in their once friendly confines.

DC United widens its chances with improved strategy

Coach Tom Soehn used the 10 day break to drive home the importance of wide play through consistent training and was fortunate to have an opponent well suited to allow his players to grow comfortable with it. His youngsters executed the plan with discipline and effectiveness to pull out a 3-0 victory which gives United the tiebreaking edge over Marathon.

DC United’s hopes of a return to the MLS Cup playoffs took a major downward turn after an agonizing 2-1 loss to the Seattle Sounders Saturday night. Rodney Wallace’s goal in the first 10 minutes of the second half brought United to level terms tilted play squarely in their favor for much of the half.
