About Washington Sports

The nation's capital is much better known for the games being played in the Capitol Building than the competition on the fields and in the arenas in space around the city. The former swamp land has risen from the muck to become the most important city in the world and has the sports teams to go with it.

Washington D.C. has basketball with the Wizards. The team that used to be known as the Bullets has used the public relations move to restart the franchise's history. The Bullets had sunk to the bottom of the league, far from the seasons in the '70s that brought home the only NBA Championship in the team's 47 year history. The Wizards began to change the direction with the signing of Gilbert Arenas. The scoring point guard willed the team to the playoffs in 2005. He and his cast of stars with Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler have quietly made noise each season.

Perhaps the best known sports tickets in the area are Washington Redskins tickets. It seems that when the Redskins are at their best, the NFL enjoys its best seasons. The Redskins have made a habit of bringing a unit that ranks among the best defenses to the NFL to FedEx Field. This defense has made them a consistent challenge in the crowded NFC East.

Baseball has always struggled to survive in Washington. Dating back to the days of the Washington Senators, the safest place for MLB has been just 40 miles away in Baltimore with the Orioles. That all changed in 2005 when the nation's capital got another chance at hosting a professional baseball team when the Expos found refuge at Nationals Park after threatening to disband in Montreal. The Nationals and the Orioles are still wary of each other, each fearful of the other team's ability to take fans from their stands.

As Washington D.C. brings representatives from all the states together, the city brings team from each major sport to its city limit. The Washington Capitals may not be one of the first hockey teams to come to mind when the average sports fan thinks of the NHL, but the team has quietly put together a good team that has become playoff contenders thanks to Alexander Semin.
